Ongoing Support for Lives of Our Two Disabled Lions in Holland
Urgent Funds to Move the Two Dingoes to Australia
The Lion's Roar is a small international charitable organization dedicated to raising awareness and improving the lives of animals in captivity. Founded by storyteller Laura Simms in 2002, the organization is now co directed by Laura, Jane Sanderson of the UK and Sue LeBoutillier of Dubai. They have successfully rehomed all the animals from a zoo in Northern Romania and continue to support several of the animals and are engaged in transporting the last tow dingoes who are temporarily homed in Holland. Please explore our website, and help us ensure the health and safety of our last beautiful creatures. You can read about our accomplishments and activities.
THE REMARKABLE TALE OF TWO DISABLED LIONS, ROMANY AND GYPSY and our LAST TWO FEMALE DINGOES
Romany and Gypsy, both disabled since they were cubs due to malnutrition and misuse for tourist photos, were left in a small cage at the Buhusi Zoo.
They were not fed properly, and ill cared for. When the zoo closed in 2007, and other lions were transported to South Africa, no one wanted to take these two animals believing they were too weak to travel and not worth the effort and money. Romany and Gypsy won our hearts. Their tenderness towards each other and gentleness were so moving, that we decided to do all we could to improve their lives and to find them a sanctuary. With the help of BORN FREE they were given medical care and an expanded cage area. Our in country care taker Alina Ababei visited them daily offering love, good food hand fed, and encouraged them to run. At last seeing a video of them running and embracing, Pantera Sanctuary offered to take them to Holland. Now, after several months our dear couple is flourishing. They are healthy, not in pain, and living with grass, sunlight and constant care.

When Pantera took Romany and Gypsy to Holland, we had two female dingoes left at the zoo with no where to go and the only alternative left being euthanasia. We were determined that they would have a chance at a decent life. They lived in terrible conditions in Romania and were separated for a long time. Arno agreed to take them to Holland while we continued our attempt to return them to Australia. Dingoes are the oldest living wild dogs in the world. It is our dream to offer them a life time future of dignity in their native home. Like so many of the animals in the zoo, the dingoes were brought to Romania, a climate unsuited to them, as gifts from leaders to a dictator. It is not possible for them to stay in Holland and we are actively working towards sending them back to Australia but need further financial help to make this happen.
