During the last few months, Lions Roar has been making every effort to find new
homes for the animals at Buhusi Zoo. After the very successful relocation of our lions Jools, James and Jerry, which have now settled into their new home at Shamwari in South Africa with the help of the Born Free Foundation, we have been hoping to find somewhere for our last remaining lions too.
We are pleased to report that Bella, our lovely lioness who is almost blind in one eye, has been offered sanctuary at Drakenstein Lion Park, (www.lionrescue.org.za), near Capetown. Drakenstein was winner of the 2007 ROAR award for the best organization by the Global White Lion Protection Trust and we are grateful to Paul Hart for giving Bella this chance to enjoy the rest of her days in comfort and relative freedom. She will be leaving for her new life in the forthcoming weeks.

Barlad Zoo, one of the zoos which has remained open in Romania, has been kind enough to offer a home to several of the Buhusi animals. Our lone deer has joined another deer and has both company and a grassy enclosure at Barlad. The sad stork has been moved from his rubble-filled cage to a much bigger area with a large pond
and many other birds for company. And our baboon pair now have their own cage alongside other baboon couples, which although in need of enrichment, is kept carefully clean and free from debris. For the first time in several years, our baboons are beginning to look more relaxed and the male is even permitting the female to take a share of the food each day! A big thank you to Barlad Zoo for providing a home for these animals and bringing them back to health.
What else do we need to do?
We still need to solve the problem of homing the dingos. We will need to provide specially-built enclosures for them, as the four cannot be kept together. In the last few months, we have separated an older female and a younger female, as there was too much aggressive behaviour between them all with some serious injuries being inflicted during fights.
We need to raise funds to create a new area, when we find them a home.
They must have an indoor area and an outside exercise run where they can show their natural boisterous behaviour in a secure enclosure. They will need to have keepers who understand dingo behaviour.
The two domestic dogs, who have lived in zoo cages for the last couple of years, have been socialized ready to leave Buhusi. They have micro-chipped and vaccinated, under the Pet passport scheme, ready to leave Romania in the summer to be homed.
Can you offer these dogs a loving home with the chance of a normal life?
