Baboons moved to new home at Barlad Zoo
|
|
In the small zoo in Northern Romania, where the winters are fierce, there were a male and a female alone in a concrete cage that looks more like a ravaged schoolyard in a city ghetto than an animal habitat. Kin, is a seven-year-old male and Lili is a five year old female.
They were given to the zoo when a circus in Basarabia failed.
John Knight, Born Free’s veterinary consultant, gave a contraceptive implant to the female baboon after she had killed the newborn baby baboon.
Years of sorrow and trauma marked our two baboons in Buhusi. We had hoped to move them to Africa, but were unable to find homes. However, they are in Barlad Zoo where they have a clean indoor area with heating, and plenty of good food. Their cage is large enough for them to move about and they are beside other baboons. Their destructive behaviors have stopped and they seem to be relaxed in their new homes. We are so grateful for Barlad for taking them. Barlad also took our one winged stork, and several domestic animals.
